Brick Look Tiles: An Australian Buying Guide
02 September 2026 · Tile Touch
Brick look tiles give you the shape and rhythm of real brickwork with the practicality of porcelain or ceramic. They suit kitchen splashbacks, bathroom walls, feature walls and, in the right slip rating, floors. This guide covers the sizes, finishes and patterns to look for, and points to the ranges we stock so you can narrow things down quickly.
What are brick look tiles?
A brick look tile is a rectangular tile made to echo the proportions of a laid brick. Most are porcelain or ceramic, so they wipe clean, resist water and hold their colour better than painted or exposed brick. You get the texture of masonry on a surface that is easy to live with.
They come in two broad camps. Long, slim bricks read modern and architectural. Smaller mini bricks and mosaics feel more classic and are easier to work around corners and tight splashbacks.
Common sizes and what they suit
Size drives the whole look, so it is worth deciding early. Here is how the ranges we carry break down.
- 50 x 150 mm is the classic small brick. The Play Brick collection (Cielo, Cipria and Borgogna) and the Yuki Alpi Dark Longbrick all sit at this size. Good for splashbacks and feature walls where you want plenty of grout lines and a traditional feel.
- 48 x 450 mm is a long, slim brick that stretches horizontally. The Lazer Brick Look range in Rust, Red and Bone White and the Canvaz Charcoal Matt Brick both use this format. It suits larger walls where you want fewer joints and a more contemporary line.
- 60 x 240 mm sits in between. The London Mini Bricks in Smoke Décor and Clay work here, handy for bathroom walls and feature panels.
- Mosaic sheets, like the Hennessy Carrara Marble Look Brickbond Matt Ceramic Mosaic, come pre-arranged on a sheet. These speed up small splashback and niche jobs because the brick pattern is already set for you.
Matt or gloss?
Finish changes both the look and the upkeep.
Matt hides water spots and fingerprints well and gives a softer, more natural surface. In our range the matt options include the Play Brick Cielo Matt and Cipria Matt, the Canvaz Charcoal Matt Brick, both London Mini Bricks, and the Hennessy Carrara mosaic.
Gloss reflects more light, which helps small or darker rooms feel brighter, and it reads a little cleaner and sharper. Gloss options include the Play Brick Cielo Gloss and Borgogna Gloss, and the Yuki Alpi Dark Longbrick.
Colour choices
Brick look ranges cover far more than red brick. If you want a warm, earthy brick tone, the Lazer Brick Look in Rust or Red leans that way, and the Play Brick Borgogna Gloss brings a deeper colour. For a soft, neutral scheme, look at the Lazer Bone White, the Play Brick Cipria Matt or the light Cielo in matt or gloss.
For cooler and darker rooms, the Canvaz Charcoal Matt Brick and the London Mini Bricks Smoke Décor give a moody, contemporary base, while the Yuki Alpi Dark Longbrick adds a glossy dark finish. The Hennessy Carrara Marble Look mosaic offers a marble-inspired white for anyone after a lighter, softer brickbond.
Can you use brick look tiles on floors?
Some can, provided the slip rating suits the area. Slip resistance is graded with a P rating, and a higher number means more grip underfoot. Two tiles in our range carry a P4 rating: the London Mini Bricks Clay and the Canvaz Charcoal Matt Brick. P4 is a solid choice for wet or high-traffic areas.
Tiles without a listed floor rating are best kept to walls and splashbacks. If a job involves a floor, especially a bathroom or laundry, check the slip rating before you buy, and ask us if you are unsure.
Laying patterns
The pattern you choose is as important as the tile itself.
- Brickbond (offset) shifts each row by half a tile, the classic brick wall look. It works with almost any brick tile and hides small size variations well. The Hennessy mosaic comes in this layout already.
- Stack bond lines the tiles up in a grid for a cleaner, more modern feel. This suits the longer 48 x 450 mm bricks.
- Vertical stacking or vertical brickbond draws the eye up, useful in rooms with lower ceilings.
- Herringbone turns slim bricks like the 50 x 150 mm sizes into a strong feature, though it uses more tiles and more cutting.
How to buy
Order a sample first. Colour and finish look different in your own light against your cabinetry and benchtops, and a sample settles it. We offer samples and can post them Australia-wide.
When you order the full quantity, measure your area in square metres and add extra for cuts and pattern waste. A brickbond or stack layout usually needs around 10 per cent extra, and herringbone more. Buying the full amount in one go keeps the batch consistent.
If you are in Sydney, you can see and handle the ranges at our Waterloo showroom before you commit. We ship across Australia for everyone else.
Frequently asked questions
Are brick look tiles suitable for kitchen splashbacks?
Yes. Porcelain and ceramic brick tiles wipe clean and handle heat and moisture behind a stovetop or sink. Smaller formats like the 50 x 150 mm Play Brick range or the London Mini Bricks are popular for splashbacks because the extra grout lines suit the scale of the space.
What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic brick tiles?
Most brick look tiles in our range are porcelain, which is dense and hard-wearing. The Hennessy Carrara mosaic is ceramic, which is well suited to walls and splashbacks. For floors, check the slip rating rather than the material alone.
Do brick look tiles need sealing?
The tiles themselves are glazed porcelain or ceramic and do not need sealing. Grout is the part that benefits from a sealer, as it is more porous. Ask your tiler about sealing the grout in wet areas.
Which brick look tiles can go on the floor?
Look for a slip rating. In our range the London Mini Bricks Clay and the Canvaz Charcoal Matt Brick both carry a P4 rating, making them suitable for floors and wet areas. Wall-only tiles do not carry a floor rating.
Can I order samples before buying?
Yes. We offer samples and post them Australia-wide, and you can view the full ranges in person at our Waterloo showroom in Sydney.
