Pool Tile Buying Guide Australia: Slip Ratings, Waterline Tiles and Mosaic Options

31 August 2026 · Tile Touch

Choosing pool tiles comes down to three things: where the tile is going (underwater, on the waterline, or on the surround where people walk), how slip resistant it needs to be, and the finish and colour you want in the water. This guide covers each in plain terms so you can order samples with confidence.

The short answer

For the pool interior and waterline, most people use small mosaics because they curve with the pool shell and read well through moving water. For the surround and coping where wet feet land, slip resistance matters most, so check the tile's slip rating before you buy. If you are unsure about a rating, order a sample and ask us before committing to a full order.

Slip ratings, explained simply

In Australia, slip resistance is measured against AS 4586. You will usually see two types of rating on a tile's technical data.

  • P ratings (P0 to P5) come from the wet pendulum test. Higher numbers mean more grip when wet. These are the ratings most often quoted for pool surrounds and other barefoot wet areas.
  • R ratings (R9 to R13) come from a ramp test done in shoes. You will see these too, though for barefoot pool areas the P rating is the more relevant figure.

A simple way to think about it: the pool surround, steps and any path where wet feet walk should use a tile with a suitable slip rating for barefoot wet areas. The waterline and the pool interior are underwater or splashed rather than walked on, so appearance and durability tend to drive the choice there.

Slip ratings vary by product and finish, so always confirm the rating for the specific tile before you order. If a rating is not listed, ask us and we will check it for you.

Waterline tiles

The waterline is the band of tile at water level, usually one or two rows around the top of the pool interior. It takes the most scrutiny because it sits at eye level and collects the tide mark of splash and sun. Mosaics suit this job well: the small format hugs curves and corners, and the grout lines help hide the odd cut.

Glossy finishes catch light and keep that wet, glassy look at the waterline. From our range, a few that lend themselves to a waterline band:

  • Anzac Gloss Ocean Blue Square Mosaic for a classic blue that reads deeper underwater.
  • Wellwood Water Green Gloss Fishscale Mosaic and Wellwood Jade Green Fishscale Mosaic for a green, lagoon feel with a scalloped shape.
  • Fairway Small Plain White Gloss Square Mosaic 48x48mm for a clean white line that lets the water colour do the talking.

Pick a waterline colour with the water in mind. Blues and greens intensify below the surface, while white keeps things bright and lets the pool interior set the tone.

Mosaic options for pools and surrounds

Mosaic shape changes the whole character of a pool. Here is how the shapes in our range tend to be used.

Fishscale

The fishscale (or scallop) shape overlaps like roof tiles and gives a soft, wave-like surface. The Wellwood fishscale mosaics come in Water Green Gloss, Jade Green, Black Gloss and Gold, so you can go coastal, dark and moody, or warm and metallic.

Penny round and square

Small rounds and squares are the traditional pool look. The Vogue Gold Matt Penny Round Mosaic brings a warm matt finish, while the Anzac Gloss Ocean Blue Square Mosaic and Fairway Small Plain White Gloss Square Mosaic 48x48mm keep to the familiar square grid.

Hexagon

Hexagons work on surrounds and feature walls near the pool. The Lucas range gives you options in Mini White Gloss, Large White Matt and Large Black Matt, so you can match the scale to the space.

Kit kat and marble look

For a spa, water feature or a wall by the pool, the Gracemere Bone White Speckle Gloss Concave Kit Kat Finger Mosaic Tile adds a fluted, finger-mosaic texture. If you want a stone-inspired look on a surround wall, the Hennessy Carrara Marble Look Cube Matt Ceramic Mosaic gives a marble-look pattern in a matt ceramic.

Gloss or matt, and where each goes

Gloss finishes reflect light and look wet, which is why they are popular in the water and on the waterline. Matt finishes read softer and are less reflective, which many people prefer on a surround. Because slip performance depends on the specific product, use the tile's slip rating rather than the finish alone to decide what goes underfoot.

Order samples first

Pool colour is hard to judge from a screen because water changes it. We recommend ordering samples and looking at them in daylight and near water if you can. You can also visit our Waterloo showroom in Sydney to see the mosaics in person, and we ship Australia-wide.

Frequently asked questions

What slip rating do I need for a pool surround?

Use a tile suited to barefoot wet areas and check its P rating against the specific product data. Ratings differ between tiles and finishes, so confirm the figure before you order rather than assuming. If a rating is not shown, ask us and we will check it.

Can I use the same tile on the waterline and the surround?

You can, but they do different jobs. The waterline is about appearance and sits underwater or in the splash zone, while the surround needs suitable slip resistance because people walk on it wet. Many pools use a glossy mosaic at the waterline and a separate tile chosen for grip on the surround.

Are mosaics better than large tiles for pools?

Mosaics are common for pool interiors and waterlines because the small pieces follow curves and corners without awkward cuts. Larger formats are more often used on flat surrounds and walls. It comes down to the shape of your pool and the look you want.

What colour should I choose for the water?

Blues and greens deepen underwater, so an Ocean Blue or a green fishscale reads richer once the pool is filled. White keeps the water bright and neutral. Ordering samples and viewing them in daylight is the best way to judge the final effect.

Do you deliver pool tiles across Australia?

Yes. Tile Touch ships Australia-wide, and samples are available so you can check colour and finish before ordering. You are also welcome to see the range at our Waterloo showroom in Sydney.
